How to visit Iguazu Falls from Buenos Aires by airlines

My journey to the awe-inspiring Iguazu Falls began in the bustling capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires. As someone with a deep-seated love for nature and wildlife, the chance to visit these iconic waterfalls was a dream come true. The most straightforward way to get there? By air.

I chose to fly, considering the distance and convenience. The flight from Buenos Aires to the nearest city to the falls, Puerto Iguazu, is approximately 1 hour 50 minutes, a breezy travel time compared to the alternatives.

Booking my flight was quite straightforward. Several airlines operate regular flights between Buenos Aires and Puerto Iguazu, including Aerolineas Argentinas and Flybondi. I opted for Aerolineas Argentinas, drawn by their reputation for reliability and service.

The flight was comfortable and efficient, and the aerial views as we approached Puerto Iguazu were simply breathtaking. The vast expanses of green, intersected by the shimmering threads of rivers, set the tone for the natural wonders that lay ahead.

Upon landing in Puerto Iguazu, I found an array of transport options available to reach the falls, which are about 17 kilometers from the city. I opted for a taxi, but there are also buses that make the journey to and from the falls regularly.

Take the bus

My adventure to Iguazu Falls wasn’t confined to just one visit. On another occasion, I decided to experience the journey by bus. This mode of travel is a fantastic option for those who aren’t in a rush and want to soak in the vibrant landscapes of Argentina.

Bus travel from Buenos Aires to Puerto Iguazu is quite a journey, taking approximately 12 to 15 hours. However, the comfort and the experiences it offered were worth every minute. Argentine long-distance buses, or ‘colectivos,’ are known for their comfort, and I can attest to this.

I booked a ‘cama suite’ ticket, which offered a seat that fully reclined into a bed, and meals were included in the ticket price. The plush seating, onboard meals, and the opportunity to watch the Argentine landscape roll past the window made the journey enjoyable.

On yet another of my adventures to Iguazu Falls, I decided to try a different mode of travel: the train. While not as commonly used as flying or taking the bus due to the longer travel time, the train journey provided you with a unique, leisurely perspective of Argentina’s diverse landscapes.

The train ride from Buenos Aires straight to Puerto Iguazu, takes approximately 18 hours. While this option is certainly not the quickest, it does offer a different, more relaxed kind of adventure.

The train was comfortable, with sleeper cabins and a dining car serving meals and snacks throughout the journey. The real highlight, though, was the scenery outside the window. From the verdant pampas to the picturesque small towns, the changing views were simply mesmerizing.

So, if you’re a slow traveler like me who enjoys relishing the journey as much as the destination, consider taking the train to Iguazu Falls. It’s a scenic voyage that will immerse you in the beauty of Argentina’s landscapes, setting the stage for the magnificence of the falls.

Choose the best time to visit

The best time to visit Iguazu Falls is during the months of April, May, September, and October. During these months, the weather is generally pleasant, and the falls are less crowded. However, if you’re a fan of high water levels and don’t mind getting wet, you can also visit during the rainy season, which runs from November to March.

Plan your visit to both sides of the falls

To experience the full grandeur of Iguazu Falls, be sure to visit both the Argentine and Brazilian sides. Each side offers unique perspectives and experiences. The Argentine side allows for a closer look and more extensive trails, while the Brazilian side provides panoramic views. Keep in mind that you will need a visa to enter Brazil, so plan accordingly.

Wear comfortable clothing and footwear

Iguazu Falls is located within a national park, and you’ll be doing a lot of walking on uneven terrain. Be sure to wear comfortable, sturdy shoes and lightweight, breathable clothes. Additionally, pack a waterproof jacket and a change of clothes, as you may get wet from the mist of the falls.

Respect the wildlife and local environment

Iguazu Falls is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including monkeys, toucans, and butterflies. While it might be tempting to get close to these creatures, remember to keep a safe distance and avoid feeding them. Also, stick to the designated trails and dispose of your trash responsibly to help preserve this natural wonder for future generations.
